From exclusion to opportunity: Six literacy initiatives transform lives

Six years ago, Wissal was a 12-year-old Syrian refugee living in the Shatila refugee camp in Beirut, Lebanon, unable to read or write and at risk of early marriage. With the support of the 'Accelerated Education for Out-of-school Displaced Youth in Lebanon' programme by the Alsama Project, she learned to read. She then taught her mother, showing her family the value of education. This year, she is preparing to start a psychology degree in Canada.

Her story is one of many success stories made possible by the programme. The Alsama Project in Lebanon began when Syrian girls in the Shatila refugee camp – many facing illiteracy and the risk of early marriage – asked to learn how to read and write. Wissal is one of them, and her journey illustrates the initiative’s positive impact.
